Getting Healthcare Right

Joan Kaylor

Joan Kaylor, a Highmark in-network therapist

I’ve been in private practice since 1994 and an LPC (licensed professional counselor) since the licensure bill and regulations were passed in 2002. I earned my Master of Science degree in community counseling from Duquesne University in 1994. Upon graduation, I was surprised to learn that professional counselors were not licensed in Pennsylvania. I was part of the lobbying effort to get the licensure law passed in Pennsylvania in 1998.

My personal struggle dealing with trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) led me to mental health.

I stopped pulling. I wanted to help others stop pulling their hair and picking their skin. I’ve served on the national board of the Trichotillomania Learning Center and the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Foundation. I founded and served as president of the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation of Western Pennsylvania. I’m also past president of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association. Today, I serve on the education and membership committees of the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology.

In addition to my private practice, I love teaching stress release workshops, taping videos for my YouTube channel, creating courses on Udemy University and studying Chinese medicine.

I enjoy singing to the “Jersey Boys” and being the mother of three dogs: Delaney, Dukie and Shy. My husband and I live in the south hills of Pittsburgh.
